Fighting for Emma Part 1

Hi everyone, it's Reese! I have some more news on Emma, and it's not good news.

Soem of my blog friends wondered if Lucy, Emma's guardian, was mistreating Emma. Unfortunately, my mom told us today that that is what is happening. Well, we can't be positive, because Lucy does not allow Emma to go anywhere, except school. No one is allowed to come to their home. Emma never is allowed to have friends, because they can't see each other outside of school. Despite Emma being kind and shy, Lucy abuses her emotionally. Apparently, Lucy yells at Emma when she doesn't talk, and then yells at her to stop talking.

You might ask, "how do you know all of this information?". This is how we were able to find out.

My mom, Emily, is working with an adoption agency to find out more about Emma. The adoption agency was somehow able to get the information out of Emma. We're not exactly sure how.  We also found out that Lucy is Emma's aunt, but after Emma's parents died, Lucy took guardianship as the only living family member.

We want to report Lucy for child abuse, but every time someone tries to tell Lucy to "let go of Emma", "give the kid a break", or threaten to report her, Lucy threatens that she will kill Emma before the authorities have a chance to get her. Isn't that terrible? Everyone is afraid to do anything, because they don't want Emma to get more hurt, or maybe even killed. I know that Lucy would go to jail for murder, but if Emma was dead, then it would all be over, wouldn't it?

I don't know what to think, and I am so worried about Emma. I've been awake so many nights thinking about her. She is my age after all, and no child (or adult) deserves to go through what Emma has to deal with. My mom said that if they can report Lucy in time, then Emma could be here by the end of May. My mom only told us this information, but I have a single gut feeling that she's hiding something.

Love,
Reese <3

  1. Hi Reese, this is Bree.

Wow, that's really terrible and scary! Unfortunately it's probably not an empty threat. If she's capable of emotionally abusing Emma and saying those things, Lucy is probably also capable of carrying through with them.

This may be resolved already, since your posts didn't show up on our blog roll for awhile, but my advice would be:

Report to the police, as well as to CPS. When there's a threat of imminent bodily harm, they need to send over officers, not just a social worker. The police will be able to contain the situation better than social services can.

Secondly, when you do make a CPS report, don't report it to Emma's social worker, because often those reports will get bogged down in confidentiality and jurisdiction issues. Instead, you need to "hotline it," which means calling the 800 number CPS provides for reports in your jurisdiction. Reports can be made anonymously (which may help protect Emma, as well as your family) and usually get much more prompt followup.

Thirdly, to get your concerns taken seriously, it can help if CPS gets multiple reports at the same time from different people, particularly if some of them are professionals. That makes the allegations easier to verify, and less likely to be dismissed as malicious slander. If you know who Emma's teacher or doctor is, remind them that they are mandated reporters and they must report suspected abuse, even if it is only suspected. If they fail to do so, they are breaking the law and risking their jobs.

Best of luck, to your family and to Emma. I hope she stays safe! We'll be thinking about you guys.

    Love,
    Bree
